Signs Associated With Cats

By AbduL Rafay Last updated: January 21, 2025 15 Min Read

The existence of signs and superstitions dates back to ancient times when there was not enough knowledge for people to explain various phenomena and laws of nature. Many beliefs are associated with animals, in particular cats, and have been passed on from generation to generation for thousands of years. Some of them remain popular, and we’ll tell you more about them.

Cat in the house

One of the most famous signs about cats and homes is connected with moving to a new home. Before settling in a new place, you first need to let the cat go ahead so that it is the first to cross the threshold of the house. It is believed that cats sense the energy of the place, and if it is negative, they will be able to neutralize negative influences.

If the cat is the first to enter the new house, then the residents will have a happy, rich life full of luck. There is another point related to moving – you should pay attention to what place the cat chooses to sleep. This is the place considered the best for the location of the bed.

What other signs exist about cats in the house :

  • A cat goes to sleep near the owner’s head – relieves stress, protects against diseases, and neutralizes negative energy. If it lies down near the heart – prolongs life, and at the feet – relieves fatigue.
  • If a cat squints its eyes, it means it has established a relationship with the brownie. The residents of the house have nothing to worry about.
  • The pet rubs against your legs and cuddles – good news, a gift or a new thing awaits the owner.
  • If a cat scratches furniture upholstery, wallpaper, or a door frame, it means there will be heavy rain.
  • Your cat left home – and had trouble with it, a baby will soon be born in the family, and too much negativity has accumulated in the house.
  • A strange cat came into the house – a good sign. If you keep the pet for yourself, it is always a sign of luck. A cat comes on the eve of a wedding – the marriage will be strong and full of happiness. When a cat comes to a home where a person is sick, it is believed that it takes the disease upon itself and frees it from the disease.

You shouldn’t chase away someone else’s cat, otherwise luck will pass you by. Even if you can’t keep the pet, you need to feed it, let it warm up, and wait until it leaves on its own.

Signs associated with cats

The cat and the guests

A well-known sign that connects a cat washing itself and the arrival of guests. It is often said about a pet that washes itself on a windowsill or in front of a door that it “washes” guests. This belief has another clarification: a cat washes its head and right ear – guests will come with good thoughts, cleans behind the left ear – expect enemies.

Such assumptions about the intentions of guests are also associated with the temperature of the pads on the cat’s paws. Warm paws – friends with good intentions will come to visit, if cold – an enemy will look into the house.

There are some other behavioral characteristics associated with guests:

  • If a cat cuddles up to a guest, it means he is a reliable person. If he hides and does not approach, he is most likely a hypocritical person.
  • If your pet is reluctant to wash itself or takes too long to do so, then you can’t expect any guests in the next couple of days.
  • A cat sitting on a windowsill staring out the window means that guests are about to arrive, and the visit will be troublesome. Another interpretation: there will be unwanted guests, and the cat is trying to delay them.
  • The pet unexpectedly climbed onto the table after the guests – those who visited came with evil intentions. The cat thus protects the family, clearing the house of negative energy.

If you want to host a desired guest again, you need to follow one belief: take some fluff from the pet’s tail and put it on the guest’s shoulder so that he does not notice. After this, the guest will return, perhaps even more than once.

Cats and signs about the road

A cat that runs in front of someone on the road is not a good sign. In this case, it is not the color of the cat that is of great importance, but the direction in which it runs in front of the traveler. If it runs from right to left, it is a bad sign.

Beliefs associated with preparations before a journey:

  • Residents leave home for long periods

Before leaving, you need to stroke the cat on the back and observe its behavior. The trip will be smooth and successful if the cat purrs or does not make any sounds. A restless pet that makes noise and meows warns that it is better to postpone the trip.

  • Packing things before the trip

If a cat sits on a suitcase with things, it means that the trip will go well, such behavior of the pet is for the best. When the pet tries to shake the bag and pull things out of it, this is a signal that it is trying to warn you about the upcoming trip.

  • The Cat Meows

Hearing a cat scream before setting off on a journey is a bad omen; something will happen on the road.

In the old days, when people traveled on horses, it was believed that a cat should not be taken along on the road. Fishermen, on the contrary, took their pets with them and believed that it would bring them luck and protect them from danger.

Folk signs about the weather

Some behavioral features of cats are associated with weather changes, which often come true. That is why cats are often called domestic weather forecasters. What behaviors of cats are associated with weather changes:

  • The pet fell asleep, curled up in a ball and hiding its muzzle – a sign of cold weather and frost.
  • If a cat sleeps on its back with its belly open, it means the weather will be warm or hot.
  • A cat has fluffed up its tail or is actively licking it – a snowstorm is coming.
  • Washing your head with your paw means good weather.
  • Scratching behind the ears means it will be rainy or snowy.
  • Sharpening claws on the edge of furniture means the weather will change for the worse.
  • Going to bed near a heat source means it will get colder.
  • A playful mood means rain.
  • He can’t find a place for himself and is worried that a hurricane will start soon.

The fact that cats predict the weather is also supported by scientific studies that confirm this ability of domestic pets.

Signs by cat colors

Most superstitions are associated with black cats. And the most popular one is associated with a black cat crossing the road – this is a bad omen, predicting bad luck. This belief appeared in the Middle Ages when it was believed that witches and dark magicians were transformed into black cats.

Black cats were considered harbingers of all troubles: illness, bad harvest, death. That is why people were afraid of a running black cat, believing that it was the devil himself or an evil spirit trying to confuse and lead them astray. Superstitious people believe that you can protect yourself from bad luck with special rituals. For example, walk backward along the road to the place where the black cat ran.

There is also a positive version of why a black cat crossed the path – it means that it blocks the road where evil spirits may be, thereby protecting the person walking. A black cat protects the home from dark spirits, so you can not be afraid to have a pet with this color in your home.

What do other cat colors mean:

  • White: pets with this color attract good luck, have a positive effect on family life, and neutralize negative energy. Snow-white pets can heal, relieve stress, and create comfort and peace in the home.
  • Red: Cats with golden fur protect the house from troubles, improve the owner’s health, and are considered a symbol of wealth. Great luck awaits those who shelter a red kitten.
  • Gray: Gray pets can protect the house from evil spirits and improve the financial situation. There will be happy changes if a gray pet appears in the house.
  • Two-color: pets with two shades of fur protect the owner and home from enemies, and promise wealth and happiness.
  • Tricolor: bring luck, prosperity, financial well-being, protect the home. Such cats combine the abilities of the previous colors of cats (black, white, and red).

Cats with a tortoiseshell coloring are considered a real talisman; they bring happiness to everyone they live with.

Beliefs about cats and money

Interesting beliefs connect pets with material well-being. Here are some of them:

  • A cat in the house itself attracts monetary enrichment, but you shouldn’t leave someone else’s pet, this will scare away luck.
  • If a pet cuddles up to its owner, it means money and gifts.
  • To become richer, you need to resort to the help of a gray cat. An important nuance – the pet’s paws must be white. If you stroke such a cat during the moon’s growth phase, financial well-being will not take long to come.

There is another unusual legend about wealth and cats. According to this legend, you need to appeal to the spirits of evil spirits by coming at midnight to a crossroads with a black cat. Turning towards the west, provoke the cat to start meowing. This sound will attract a spirit who wants to buy the pet. The owner should agree without hesitation and sell the cat for a ruble. This coin will always return and bring the desired enrichment.

You shouldn’t unconditionally believe in signs and see some context in all manifestations of your pet. Sometimes a cat that cuddles and meows just wants to eat.

Superstitions about cats

Cats have lived alongside humans for so many years that a huge number of superstitions have developed around them, here are a few more examples:

  • You can’t give a cat as a gift; you need to ask for a symbolic fee in return.
  • Pouring water on pets reduces their lifespan by half.
  • Sincere care for homeless cats improves karma.
  • If a cat sneezed next to a young couple, it means there will be a wedding soon.
  • The pet twitches its tail and behaves anxiously – the owner is expecting difficulties.
  • If a kitten is abandoned near your house, it means great luck.
  • A cat lies down in a baby’s crib, which means there are evil spirits there, from which she protects.
  • You can’t hurt cats, otherwise there will be trouble.
  • To get rid of the evil eye, you need to stroke the cat on the scruff of the neck with your left hand.

There are still many signs in the world, and sometimes the same cat behavior means something opposite among different people.

You shouldn’t take superstitions too seriously, because after so much time since their inception, many of the pet’s habits can be explained quite logically. It is important to take care of a cat of any color of fur, then it will bring joy and happiness to the house without any signs.
