National Cat Day is on October 29. So, we will explain a little bit about the purpose of National Cat Day and how you can celebrate it!

What Is National Cat Day?

National Cat Day is a special holiday to celebrate our furry cat friends. It was created to teach people about cats without homes and to ask cat lovers to help spread awareness.

History of National Cat Day

National Cat Day started in 2005. Since then, it has become a popular yearly event for cat lovers. You can be part of the next celebration.

How Can You Get Involved in National Cat Day?

You can help in different ways—choose what makes you feel good and proud of what you’ve done!

1. Have an Appreciation Day with Your Cat

When was the last time you had fun with your cat? There are many ways to show your cat you love them. Even something small like buying a new toy and playing together can make a big difference.

Or, if you want to go even bigger, you could try:

  • Having a spa day
  • Going on a hike
  • Letting your cat ride in a backpack while you walk
  • Getting a cat hoodie for pouch snuggles

or you can devise a creative way to say, “I love you.”

2. Donate to a Cat-Based Organization

Want to help an animal shelter you care about? Consider donating. Many shelters accept online payments.

If you’d rather support a local shelter, contact them directly to ask about payment options. They might accept cash, cards, or even supplies instead of money.

Many people don’t know how busy and underfunded animal shelters are. Even small donations make a big difference; they’re always grateful for your help.

3. Volunteer at a Shelter or Rescue

Want to help but can’t give money? Try volunteering! Many animal shelters need more people to spend time with their cats. You can visit and let the cats decide how to interact with you.

Some cats will be playful, while others might want to snuggle. Shy cats might prefer watching from far away. Your attention helps them become more friendly and makes their day happier.

Being stuck in a small cage is hard for cats. They need to move around, scratch, and explore. By volunteering, you can make a cat’s day better and help out the shelter staff at the same time.

4. Adopt a New Family Member

When you visit an animal shelter and spend time with homeless cats, you might feel like adopting one. Have you thought about getting a new cat recently? Maybe your current cat needs a friend, or you promised your child a pet.

Adopting a cat is always a good time, as long as your housing allows pets. If you’ve been thinking about it and feel ready, don’t hesitate! You’ll find a wonderful cat who would love to join your family.

5. Advocate for Homeless Cats

Help homeless cats by sharing facts and shelter posts on social media. Spread the word about adoption and cat homelessness to make a difference. You can also share posts of cats looking for homes from local shelters.

The more cat lovers that can rally together to make a difference, the better!

6. Check in on Your Homeless Cats Locally

Many stray cats gather in certain areas of towns and cities. People who live nearby help these cats by giving them food, water, and shelter.

You can also chip in, providing whatever you think might be most needed. You can also create shelter boxes for cold or poor weather.

Shelter Statistics

The number of animal shelters is unfortunate. Many pets, including cats, dogs, rabbits, and horses, don’t have homes nationwide.

Every year, 7.6 million pets are brought to US shelters. Of these, 3.4 million are cats; sadly, 2.7 million are put down. These numbers are very upsetting.

But if animal lovers work together, we can help reduce these numbers significantly.

Remember to Spay and Neuter Your Cats!

National Cat Day reminds us to fix our cats. Because cats can have babies at a very young age, vets suggest fixing kittens before they’re four months old.

When cats become able to have babies, they can develop annoying habits. Female cats become very clingy when in heat, and both males and females may spray pee to mark their space and find mates. These habits are not only unpleasant at home but can also lead to unwanted pregnancies.

If your cat gets pregnant, you must regularly take the mother and kittens to the vet. You’ll also need to find homes for 2 to 12 kittens. That’s why it’s better to fix your cat early.

Conclusion

Mark your calendar for National Cat Day! Everyone can join in the fun whether you have a cat or love cats. There are many ways to celebrate and help cats with other cat fans!

Call first to learn their rules if you want to join an event or visit an animal shelter.
